CUMMINGS/CUMMINS
We do not yet know the name of the Scottish
immigrant that brought this line to America. But we do know that John Cummings
and his wife, Martha, were both born in Pennsylvania around 1755. They raised
their family in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania until 1816, when they
"removed" down the Ohio River to Franklin Co., Indiana. By 1875, their
descendents had changed the spelling to Cummins and most had migrated on to
Kansas, Illinois, and Missouri.

HAMILTON
The Hamilton name supposedly derived originally
from the lands of Hamildoun in Northumberland. This Hamilton family line is
believed to have originated in Renfrewshire, Scotland, moving to Ireland in
16-17th century due to the political unrest at home. Robert Franklin Hamilton
(1745-1822) lived in Dublin, Ireland. Robert had three wives, 22 sons and two
daughters. There, the Hamilton family is thought to have become a strong
influence in Irish politics. His youngest son, Robert Franklin Hamilton II,
immigrated to the United States in 1791. This move was probably due to the lack
of sufficient inheritance at home. Young Robert first settled in Charleston,
South Carolina. By 1803, Robert had also married three times and had moved his
large family to Buncombe Co., North Carolina. The Hamilton family lived in the
area that eventually became Henderson Co., North Carolina.
